damnatio ad schola

Romans used “damnatio ad ludum” (condemned to games) to condemn convicts as gladiators. Modern day parents use “damnatio ad schola” (condemned to school) on their own wards.

Are the modern day parents too scared of this sentence that they try to minimize their kids exposure to games and sports? A bat and ball is replaced by a 10kg back-pack of school books. Play time is consumed by unending homework.

Today’s students life is so competitive that they never understand the value to teamwork. They hide correct information, never share notes, and sometimes even back-stab just to remain ahead of the class. Is this what you want to teach the wards?

The moment these students graduate and enter the corporate world, they face entirely new challenges. To succeed they need to work as teams…. an alien skills to them.
